1. American Samoa

If breathtaking beaches is what you're looking for along with a laid back, safe and cheap environment to explore, then American Samoa backpacking trip will be right up your sleeve. There are just two main islands to explore so getting around is pretty straight-forward. Most backpackers seeking the American Samoa travel experience take in the beautiful beach at Lalomanu which has the most lively backpacker atmosphere before heading for a little peace and quiet along the more rustic south coast of Upolu. Most backpackers then head over to Savaii Island on the inter-island ferry which takes just over an hour and head for Manase Beach along the north coast which is the best place to base yourself.

2. New Caledonia

Backpacking in New Caledonia is limited mostly due to the prohibitive prices and high standard of living in the country. Most backpackers visiting New Caledonia head out to the Loyalty Islands to marvel at the beaches and take in some cultural interaction and sightseeing, with tribal hut accommodation available.

For those visiting Noumea, there is only one backpacker hostel which is located in the downtown district, with a couple of other good cheap accommodations in the lively Latin Quarter and out towards the beaches.

3. Tonga

The owners of Adventure Backpackers in Vava’u know very well the difference between travellers and tourists. The latter are those who tend to stick to seeing the famous spots with a tour guide, while the former are those who also want to explore the island on their own and get their own taste of local Tongan culture.

4. Vanuatu

Air Vanuatu is the only major airline operating between the islands at the time of writing and because of this their prices are “sky-high”! There is a great way to bring down these costs (which we missed out on) that we will share with you under our “Transport” section.
